The Vitro Clay pipe factory is situated in Vereeniging and has been in operation since 1967. A range of vitrified clay pipes and fittings are manufactured in compliance with SABS 559-1970 (amended). Clay pipe is well known for its ability to carry a wide range of domestic, commercial and industrial wastes.

Vitrified clay pipes are renowned for their robust maintenance-free characteristics and ease of installation. The high minimum crushing strength (45kN/m) and rigidity allow simple laying procedures with no complicated selection and control systems for backfilling material.

These pipes are made from natural clays and are thus also environmentally friendly. The longevity of clay pipes is an added advantage. All the above properties, as well as their high resistance to acids and alkalis, make the Vito Clay Pipe the best, most cost-effective long term solution to all house drainage and sewer reticulation.

The Vitro subsoil drainage system consists of plain-ended vitrified clay pipes with specially designed and manufactured polypropylene circumferential couplings permitting water entry into the pipeline at the joints.
The Vitro subsoil drainage system is available in the following sizes and strengths:
100 mm 45kN/m
150 mm 45kN/m
 JOINT PERFORMANCE
The "Vitrosleeve" system safeguards against possible ground movement. The joint retains a fully effective seal under each of these conditions at a pressure of 6m water head.
1. Vitrosleeve - tolerance of 20mm linear draw per joint.
2. Vitrosleeve - tolerance of 2.5° angular movement per joint.
3. Vitrosleeve - tolerance of 5mm line displacement per joint.
AIR TESTING
Air testing of pipelines is convenient and inexpensive to carry out. The Air Test recommended by Vitro has been developed by NBRI Information Sheet X/BOU 2-34. Test after laying and again after initial backfilling. Allow the manometer to stand at 375 water gauge (3,75Pa) for at least 2 minutes before testing, then allow pressure to drop from 250 to 125mm water gauge (2,50kPa to 1,25kOa) should be indicated in the table below. For all pipelines constructed of air permeable materials, the NBRI recommend that pipes should be wet before testing, in order to identify flaws in the pipeline which will allow water leakage. The requirement is regarded as being the final standard when pipelines are tested for air tightness in accordance with NBI specifications.

Pipeline diameter (mm) Length of pipeline L equivalent to 58mm2 internal surface area (m) Minimum time interval for pressure drop of 1,25kPa (a) Minimum time interval for length of pipeline exceeding L (a)
100 184,5 118 0,64 L
150 123 177 1,44 L
VITROSLEEVE LAYING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Check that the components are not damaged. place pipe upright on firm base with end to be joined uppermost. Apply soft soap to a clean pipe end. Do not use oil or grease as lubricant.
2. Press the coupling evenly onto the lubricated pipe end. Push it firmly down until separating web of coupling rests on pipe end.
3. Take particular care to keep the coupling straight - avoid pushing it on an angle.
4. To place coupling onto a fitting which will not stand vertically (eg. a bend) push lubricated end of fitting down onto coupling placed on a firm base. Push down until pipe rests on separating web.
5. Lay pipe with coupling facing next pipe to be laid. Attach coupling onto next pipe and push pipe end into coupling on first pipe. Prevent soil or grit entering the joint. If necessary place a protective board or sheet of plastic under joint being made.
